How to use our 4G/GSM-tracker

tracker overlay

Summary

  • Four things must be in place to see live positions from a tracker:
    • The trackeren must have power in the battery.
    • It must have contact with the GPS satellites.
    • It must have 4G/GSM coverage.
    • We must know who is carrying the tracker.
  • To check if tracker is on or off push the button <1 sec. If the button light is green the tracker is on. If the light is red it is off.
  • In order to turn the tracker on or off: Firstly check that the button is not lit, then push and hold the button and count: 1001, 1002, 1003. Release the button.
  • Place the tracker such that it has a free view of the sky. Good alternatives are on the shoulder strap of a back pack, prefereably behind the shoulder. On to op the back pack lid is also a good location.

Button and lights

The tracker has one button with many functions:

  • The main function is to turn the tracker on or off.
  • A gentle push will show the tracker status. The button light shows if it is on or off. The four orange lights show the battery percentage.
  • If the button is pressed for more than 5 sec. an SOS-alert is sent to our server.
Button press Function Sound Lights
< 0.8 s. Status No sound All lights on
0.8 - 2 s. SOS Battery lights rolling
2 - 5 s. Arm Battery lights flash on
2 - 5 s. Disarm Battery lights flash on
> 5 s. SOS Battery lights rolling
> 20 s. Reboot No sound Battery lights turn on, then all lights on

The button has lights. They work like this:

  • If the tracker is charging:

    • The button is red until the battery is approximately 80% full.
    • The button is green when the battery is more than 80% full.
  • If the button is pushed when not charging:

    • The button is red if the tracker is off.
    • The button is green if the tracker is on.

    tracker on tracker off

The four orange lights are the battery indicatators. Four lights = 100%. Two light = 50% etc.

The two green light top right indicate:

  • Top: Contacet with the GPS-satelites
  • Bottom: 4G/GSM-coverage

How does the tracker work.

The tracker connects to the GPS-satelites to collect posistion data. These positions are then send to our server using the 4G or GSM-network. For the tracker to work it must have contact with the satelites, it must have 4G/ GSM coverage and it must be charged. We also need to know who carries wich tracker.

Charging the tracker.

To fully charge a tracker with empty battery takes approximately three hours. To check the battery status push the button. This will make the four battery indicator light light up. If all four are lighted the tracker is fully charged. If the tracker need charging place it carefully in a charging tray or use a magnetic charging cable. When a tracker is connected to the charger the button lights up. If it is red the tracker is not fully charged. If the button is green the tracker is fully charged. The pictures below shows a tray with some trackers fully charged and some that needs a bit more charging.

Turn the tracker on and off.

This video shows two things. Firstly a check to see if the tracker is on or off. Since the button is red it means that the tracker is off. Secondly the tracker is turned on. The confirmation sound is:"daaaa-di-di"

The next video shows a check and then the tracker is turned off. Remember that the tracker is never completely off - it just sends updates less frequent. The confirmation sound is:"di-di-daaaa"

For the athlete

If you participate in a race where our trackers are used there are three things you can do to improve the quality of the tracking:

  1. Make sure you bring your tracker along - do not leave it in you car :-)
  2. Check that your tracker is turned on and charged. Do this by pushing the button. If the button turns green, the tracker is on. Check the batteries as well. That is the four orange lights on the left side. Four lights = full battery.
  3. Make sure the tracker is securely fastened and preferably with a good view of the sky.

FAQs

  • "Why does the tracker not show up on the map?" The tracker should show on the map from the start of the race until the athlete has passed the finish line or is set DNF or DNS.
  • "Why is the position not updated more often?" Is the tracker turned on? The update frequency is between 60 seconds and 15minutes depending on the duration of the race.
  • "An athlete just passed me, but the position has not been updated. Why?" The system has normally very small delays, but in areas with poor capacity in the mobile network or there are many trackers and mobiles working at the same time delays may occure.
  • "Why are they switching position in the lead all the time?" The trackers may be sending with different frequency. It may also be that they have the same frequency, but are sending at different times.
  • "How long does the batteries last?" The battery lifte is heavily dependent on sending frequency, 4G/GSM-coverage, temeprature and where the tracker is located.
